In
late 2008 I decided to study art, after being inspired from an old school
assignment. Below is a statement I wrote in my first year of studying.
About a year ago my mother gave me an old school project book from my grade
four class, titled All About Me. It was a nostalgic glimpse of my life as an
eight year old. Amongst drawings of my bedroom, a family tree and a photo of my
dog, was one very important question: ‘What do you want to be when you grow
up?’
Feeling disillusioned with my career in the print industry, this question was
to be more pertinent than ever. There, written in poorly executed running
writing was the answer ‘An Artist’. This inspired me to enroll in art school
the following year. I had always been drawn to art, as well as the stories of
artists lives, especially those that expressed themselves in unconventional
ways. Jean Michel Basquiat, Frida Kahlo,
and Jackson Pollock to name a few.
Whilst my time in the print industry and Graphic Design proved to be somewhat
creative in a way, I felt constrained by not only the boundaries that are necessary
for the industry to function but by the overall dominance of digital
technology. My goal is to express myself through the medium of art and to
explore my own internal view of the world. During the past year studying I have
seen glimpses of my dream unfolding and am very excited about what I may
achieve in the future.
